How these figures are worked out
Each row of the table is worked out by the same engine as the Take-Home Pay Calculator, with the calculator’s own assumptions:
- An employee on one job for the full year. The gross salary is the whole year’s pay, and CPP and EI are deducted at the employee rates. Each stops once its yearly maximum is reached: CPP (including CPP2) stops at $85,000 of earnings and EI at $68,900.
- No RRSP contribution; the enhanced CPP is deducted. The calculator’s RRSP field is left at zero. The engine does deduct the enhanced part of CPP (1% of earnings between $3,500 and $74,600, plus all of CPP2) from taxable income, and credits only the base contribution (4.95% of the same earnings). No other deduction is taken.
- Basic credits only. The federal and Ontario basic personal amounts, the Canada Employment Amount and the credit for CPP and EI contributions, each applied where that jurisdiction’s own formula allows it. The federal basic personal amount phases down between $181,440 and $258,482 of net income. Dependants, union dues, medical expenses, donations and tuition are not modelled.
- 2026 figures for the whole year. Brackets, basic personal amounts and payroll rates are the 2026 figures on the Ontario rates page, applied to the full year; the engine does not split the year at a mid-year change. The method is CRA’s annual payroll-deduction formula (T4127).
- Ontario’s basic tax reduction does not apply in any row. The reduction ($300, phased out once Ontario tax reaches $600) is nil here, because Ontario tax before the Health Premium is already above $600 at $30,000, the lowest salary in the table. Ontario tax includes the Health Premium and, where it applies, the surtax; the dependant part of the reduction is not modelled.
- Rounding. Each dollar figure is rounded to the cent for display. Net pay per month is the unrounded annual figure divided by 12 and net pay every two weeks is divided by 26, so adding up the printed columns can differ from net pay by a cent or two.
- Average tax rate. Federal plus Ontario income tax divided by the gross salary, printed to one decimal as the calculator prints it. It does not include CPP and EI. For marginal rates see the combined marginal tax rate table on the Ontario rates page.
